Skating and Crafting!

We have loved seeing the improvements in skating ability over the past few weeks!

We had a busy morning on Friday, creating animal headbands for our Winter Concert. We want to say an extra special big Thank You to Ash and Rene for jumping right in and helping the kids with their creations! They are so super cute!

Budding artists!

"When children explore and get messy, and reflect on what they learned and what is true for them, they strengthen their critical thinking mind and their capacity to be innovative and imaginative"- Reggio Emilia

Noa's Show and Tell- favourite activity is creating art, so he showed us some drawings on the whiteboard. Mrs. Burgess added the names and suggested lines attaching the necks, arms and bellies of each person, but the rest was all him! Mrs. Burgess' favourite part? How tall Declan is-perhaps Noa is predicting the future?! Oh, and she loves Luke's snazzy glasses and Noa's funky arms too!

Our students have really enjoyed exploring the paint station this week! Expect lots of beautiful masterpieces coming home in the next little while!

Great show today!

We travelled by bus to McKim theatre today for an amazing show! DuffleBag Theatre Company put on a great performance of Robin Hood, featuring 4 very funny actors and involved a few student participants! Everyone laughed a lot! Ask your child about it (prompts: what did you do when the actors said "Robin Hood" or "King Richard"? what did you do when something good/something evil happened? what was the funniest part?). For more information about DuffleBag, visit: http://www.dufflebag.com/

Thank You Nature!

Our Red Group had a Mindful Moment outside again, where students found their own space to be quiet in for a little while, and before going inside, students gave thanks to nature for: letting us have fun, letting us see a squirrel, giving us trees for their leaves, leaving sticks in the field for us to find, putting deer in our fort spot so we could count them, letting us make a leaf pile, being so nice out, being a little chilly but not too much, not raining, leaving us a little tiny snow patch, and giving us leaves to crunch crunch our boots on. We just love these reflection times!

The First Day at Garden View Village

We have spent time talking with the students about the time we will spend at Garden View Village, discussing the fun activities we will do, the behavioural expectations while we are there and the people we might meet. I then did a few activities with them around the book Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge, which is about a boy who helps a special friend who has lost her memory. The students connected with the story well, and were able to come up with all kinds of things they could give someone to help them remember (i.e. something warm, something from long ago, something that makes you laugh, something that makes you sad and something as precious as gold. Ask your child what they remember about Miss Nancy and her memories. Then the day came for our first visit to Garden View Village! We loved the bus ride there and then did a great job getting boots/coats organized once we were there. The staff, Lee Ann and Kathy, are amazing and had 8 women waiting for us when we arrived! We also had two very helpful parents, Ash and Denise, along for the ride, and their willingness to jump right in and help wherever they saw a need was amazing. Students first ate their snack and then introduced themselves to our new Senior Friends. Some of their names are (words in quotations were from the kids): “Dash” (Doris), “the one with the red clothes” (Marg), Iris, Luella, and “the one with the pretty leaf shirt” (Thelma). Kathy noted how happy all of the seniors looked watching the kids! We then took the kids on a tour of the building, and many of them commented on how beautiful it was. They especially loved the "circle light", which I finally figured out was the open area over the dining room where there was beautiful natural light shining down. They also loved the fish tank! They visited some more Senior Friends during their coffee time, and had a special encounter with a delightful senior coming in from a trip to the pool (she wanted to know all of their names and of course, there were 16 little bodies very eager to tell her!). The kids also loved the animal figurines and stuffies that some of the seniors had outside their doors. My favourite part was listening to the students interacting with seniors as we passed by, saying "Hi, we're you're new friends". If only we could all be so bold and confident! Oh, to be 5 years old again. We then went back to the Golden Room and Denise read a wonderful story. The students then chose a variety of fine motor stations to travel between at the tables (colouring, geoboards, puzzles and pompom/clothespin/egg carton sorting). We then said goodbye to our new friends and our new classroom, and boarded the bus back to the school. In the afternoon, we reflected on our time spent at Garden View Village, and this is what the students said:

I liked when…
Ava- we got to say all of our names
Ciara- we were colouring with the rainbow colours
Jaylyn- we went in the hallway (tour)
Bryce- I saw my mom
Hailey- we had a tour
Sam- we saw the bunny on the chair
Mason- we got to see where our friends eat for snack time
Chase- we went up the stairs
Fyn- we had to say our names and having mom there
Philip- we got to see the big light (sky light)
Charlie- we got to see the puzzle and game room and the animals at the doors of the people who were having some muffins. And I liked that Lee Ann got me a banana.
Alex- I saw the flowers in the big circle of light
Sully- the last person came in (the lady coming in the front door when we were in the lobby)
Logan- we went on the tour and saw the bunny that is the same as the one at my house
Cooper- we went on the bus
Kaden-we did puzzles

The red group’s morning at Garden View Village will have the same structure next week, so we look forward to hearing about their experiences as well!

Trade Fair success!

Thank you to all of the families who came out to support the Marysville PAC Trade Fair yesterday! The numbers are in from the incredible Trade Fair event organizer, Lisa Cox, and she reports that we had over 500 adults come through the door! We loved seeing lots of smiling (painted!) faces come to visit us at the concession stand! The funds raised by our Parent Advisory Council support various literacy programs at our school, as well as the busing for programs like our Intergenerational Classroom Project and swimming! Thanks again :)

Snow, Skating, and Sorting!

My apologies for not posting these pictures sooner- my course work has been especially heavy these past two weeks, so I am just catching up now!

On November 4th, we had a wonderful first real snow day at school! We took advantage of the fresh new snow and had a great time exploring!

We experienced a wonderful "mindful moment" outside, where we all found our own place in the field to sit or lie down. We used this time to enjoy a few quiet moments in the day (we sat/lied down for almost 10 minutes!), and listened to the sounds around us. When we came together to reflect upon the experience, students seemed to really enjoy it and were hopeful that we could do this more often!

We have been having a great time skating at Marysville Arena! Our teachers and the helpful parents have been amazed with our growth! Thank you again to all the parents who have taken time from their Thursday to help us both on and off the ice!

We have been working hard on sorting and comparing all kinds of things! In the pictures below, we were working on sorting bears and some other little creature (some thought it was a fox, others thought it was a cat). We have been playing a game, "Guess My Rule", where students guess the rule that the teacher used to sort the manipulatives. We have also begun creating our own sorting rules and asking our friends why we sorted the items the way we did. This is an easy game that can be played at home too! The more practise, the better! Ask your child to tell you what the sorting rule was that each child used in these pictures!

Learning Stations

We have started Learning Stations in both classrooms. The students have been rotating through stations with our direction for a few weeks now, so this week, we added the Learning Station Chart to foster independence and serve as a visual for all students. This picture is an example of what the chart looks like in one classroom for this week. Throughout the week, students will travel through 4 "Must Do" stations and up to 6 "Can Do" stations in each classroom. The 4 "Must Do" stations you see here are Creation (creating our signs for the doors at Garden View Village), Fine Motor (creating poppies for the wreath at the Remembrance Day assembly this Friday), Teacher (working on numbers 1-10 and 1:1 correspondence between number cards and objects) and Science (exploring light on a projector with a variety of materials- this one is such a hit!). Students will end up doing 2 "Must Do" stations each day. Once students are finished their "Must Do" station, they move on to their "Can Do" stations (under the stars). We will let you know what stations students were working on each week in our weekly newsletters so that you can talk about them at home!
