Pink Shirt Day

We finished off a fun-filled, busy week with Pink Shirt Day! We learned that we wear pink shirts to show support for anti-bullying efforts across Canada. We really are impressed with what an incredibly supportive and caring group of students we have at Marysville Elementary. It was great to see the sea of pink today!

We attended an amazing anti-bullying assembly, where we watched an awesome performance by the Grade 3's singing True Colours.

We combined our anti-bullying assembly with our Jump Rope for Heart kickoff. We had the pleasure of watching McKim's skipping club come to perform- they were incredible! They really pumped us up about practising our own skipping. Ask your child about their favourite skipping "trick".

The assembly ended with the grade 2's performing their dance to Cotton Eyed Joe. The grade 3's and kids from McKim also joined them, which was so cool for us to watch!

If you are interested in more pictures from the assembly, Mrs. Hammond created this slideshow that you can check out!

Celebrating the 100th Day of School!

We had SUCH a blast celebrating our 100th day of school today!
Granny twins and our other old friends

They just looked so cute!

Fancy old men

Too bad there isn't audio with pictures... these two were trying out their "100 year old voices", which were great!

Mrs. Bancks is going to stay fancy when she's 100!

Old man twins and the old guy who gets into all the pictures :)

Just adjusting our glasses

Another one that will remain fancy until she's 100

Even 100 year olds need to go outside for some fresh air

Visiting a couple 100 year old friends in grade 1

The blue group had fun making 100s day crowns and portraits. The red group had fun making 100s day fruit loop necklaces and flipping coins 100 times. They also made portraits of themselves and wrote one thing they want to before they are 100.
My personal favourite: "pack up and move into Gardenview"

The teachers looked very convincing, and were told by a few people that they should consider retirement.

What a fun way to celebrate 100 days of Kindergarten!

A beautiful day for a ski!

We had a totally awesome time at the ski hill today! Blue skies, warm weather, and SNOW... what could be better?!

One of the coolest things to watch is kids learning to ski- that apprehension and fear that most have at the beginning, the shaky steps to start, the thrill of the first time taking the magic carpet, and that that burst-through-your-jacket joy they have when they come down the hill successfully. We had so many great parent volunteers who ran up and down the hill with kids, allowing them lots of opportunities to ski down from the top. The kids learned to shuffle their feet to move, and to "pizza" when they want to slow down or stop. Lots of the kids worked on moving through pylons too. The excitement filled the air today, and everywhere we looked, there was smiles stretched ear to ear!

We were amazed to see how many "skiers" we had in Kindergarten when making the groups. Since both of us were helping at the magic carpet, we didn't capture many of the kids on the t-bar or chairlift, but are hoping to get some pictures from parents to add here!

Thank you again to everyone for your support in making this a great day! The kids (and volunteers) will sleep well tonight!

Celebrations galore!

We had an amazing time at Carnaval last Tuesday! We went through 8 different stations (ice sculptures, maple taffy, snow exploration, dog sled rides, hockey, foosball, pictures with Bonhomme and our very favourite, beaver tails and hot chocolate treats). We loved being with our buddy groups and new friends from Lindsay Park for the morning. A very special Thank You to Allison Kostiuk, the grade 2/3 teacher at Lindsay Park who organized this amazing day for us!

Mrs. Keiver telling us about the beaver tail as we ate beaver tails!

The blue group had a lot of fun helping make play dough this week. We decided we wanted purple play dough, but after mixing the red and blue, we discovered the most beautiful speckled play dough! We all had fun helping!

We LOVE birthdays here in Kindergarten, and we had a lot of fun celebrating a pretty cool one this week- three kids born on the same day (our "triplets"). The kids enjoyed the goodies from the newly six year olds!

Busy week ahead! (February 23-27)

Next week is feeling very full already, so here's some information/reminders about what is going on:

Tuesday: last swimming day (pack bathing suit, towel)

Wednesday: ski day

What To Pack:
·         Dress your child in warm clothes (thick socks, waterproof gloves, hat, jacket and snowpants)
·        A labelled water bottle
·         A full, nutritious lunch in a lunch bag
·         A snack in your child’s jacket pocket that they can have during a break at the ski hill. Easy ski day snacks include granola bars, fruit leathers and cheese strings. Please do not send items that can be easily squished (i.e. bananas, yogurt tubes, etc.) or items that require utensils (i.e. pudding)
·         Helmet, skis and boots (if you are not renting)- LABELLED with child’s name and teacher’s name. Since the K`s are not leaving right away in the morning, please do not send your child wearing their ski boots (they will have time to change).

*If you have signed up to volunteer for ski day and end up having to cancel, please give us as much notice as possible, as we will need to shuffle kids between the remaining parents.

Thursday: 100th day of school- teachers and students are encouraged to dress up like they are 100 years old!

Friday: Anti-bullying/pink shirt day (everyone is encouraged to wear a pink shirt... if you have any extras, please send them in your child's backpack for others to borrow if they don't have one). We will also be having a pink shirt day/skipping assembly at 10:10 in the gym for those parents interested in joining us.

Thank you!

Fun with Valentine's

We have been focused on Valentine's Day for weeks now! We created Valentine cards and coupons for our parents, and then chose the most slippery, wet day to take them to the mailbox! The kids loved mailing their envelopes, and were really excited to tell us when their parents received them!

We then created "Heart Guys" for our Senior friends at Garden View Village. They loved our cute characters! We also were able to check out their amazing "Sweethearts" wall, showcasing pictures from weddings and other special occasions in the lives of our Senior friends. They even had two wedding dresses hanging up there and we were able to touch one!

On Friday, we
On Friday, we brought Valentine's to school for our friends. Most of us were able to successfully hand out our Valentine's quickly, placing them into the heart envelopes we created. Thank you so much parents for helping us out with simplifying the Valentine's!

We also had Dylan come by to visit us and bring Valentine's! He has been off with a broken leg for a few weeks now and we are really missing him.
We also created really neat heart art that day. We did a great job creating our hearts, cutting them apart and then putting them back together!

We also had K/1 time focused around hearts with a Heart Hunt outside. We had to work with our buddy to find a rainbow of hearts hidden in the snow (a special thank you to the grade 3's for helping me with the hiding!). The kids had a blast!
