Happy Halloween!

What an impressive set of costumes!

Everyone had a great morning moving through stations set up in each classroom with their buddy groups. In the afternoon, we visited the Grade 3 Halloween Howl in the gym, and then did Halloween related activities.

I hope everyone has a great time trick-or-treating! Just a friendly reminder, please don't send any treats in lunches that have nuts in them.

Taking a Closer Look At Squash

Our class spent a number of days exploring the squash that my aunt so kindly grew for us!

Day 1: Describe your squash to the class
Connor: it’s yellow right here and there’s a big pointy and there’s a hook and green holding on
Cedar: on here is kinda green and kind of yellow in the cracks and it’s kinda in right here
Mathew: there’s a hook and a green thing at the bottom
Nara: Mine has parts of green and yellow parts
Taylor: mine is yellow and green and white and it has green on the stem and it has a little hook
Samuel: my pumpkin is orange and green and it has a little hook
Trenton: my stem fell off. Green and yellow.
Ethan: mine has brown on it
Beau: there’s orange on this side and yellow on the other side
Trent: mine has yellow on it
Phoebe: mine has green on this side and yellow on this side
Skylar: mine is bumpy
Ozzy: Mine is squishy
Zoe: mine’s mixed with green and yellow
Jennifer: my pumpkin has a little bit of orange in the middle
Tinneke: mine has yellow and green mixed
Easton: mine is hard and it’s bumpy
Liam: mine has yellow and green and it has a stem and it has white

How is it the same as a pumpkin?
Zoe: they both have a little yellow and green on them
Skylar: it has a stem
Easton: it has green on the stem
Phoebe: they can roll
Taylor: it’s bumpy and it has the same shape
How is it different?
Jennifer: it’s because the stem is different because it broke
Mathew: This has yellow and a hook
Nara: there’s bits of green
Taylor: because it’s not orange
Zoe: they have smaller bumps than a pumpkin
Trenton: pumpkin is bigger
Ethan: pumpkins don’t have green on them
Ozzy: A pumpkin has three sets: bright orange at the end, green at the beginning, and then yellow
Taylor: when it’s green, hat means it needs to grow a little more
Ozzy: frost kills everything, that’s why you have to harvest everything before frost
Cedar: I growed some gourds in the same garden we growed some pumpkins and squash

What are you still wondering about the squash?
Tinneke: I want to know if there’s green inside
Taylor: I want to know if theres the same seeds inside as a pumpkin
Easton: I want to know if it’s orange like a pumpkin inside?
Nara: if there’s yellow inside
Cedar: if it’s white inside
Beau: who made the marks on my pumpkin?

Day 2: Compare a squash with your partner and discuss similarities and differences
Taylor/Tinneke: a little bit of green and orange/mine is bigger
Jennifer/Zoe: both got a stem/mine has green and Jennifer’s doesn’t
Easton/Liam:  mine has white and his does/both have hooks/he doesn’t have a small thing like mine (bottom)
Cedar/Trenton: we both don’t have stems/more green than Cedar’s
Mathew/Kane: we both got hooks/Mathew’s small mine big
Beau/Ozzy: both don’t have stems/pretty much the same-mine is really circly and Beau’s is really not that circly
Phoebe/Nara: both have stems/Phoebe has less yellow
Trent/Connor: both have green/he doesn’t have much green like me and I have more green and more orange
Dustin/Ethan/Samuel: we all have stems/we all have yellow/one is medium one is small one is big
Skylar/Marlee: Skylar- we both have stems/I have less green than Skylar

Day 3: We examined and compared the insides of a pumpkin, a spaghetti squash, and a regular squash. We removed the 'guts' and roasted the seeds, which were really yummy!

Day 4: We selected a squash that we liked most, and drew a detailed drawing of the squash. We were then able to take the squash home!

Take Me Outside Day!

We had an amazing time celebrating Take Me Outside day today! Our class was buddied up with students from Ms. Kinsey's class, and then enjoyed moving between 8 outdoor stations. Students from the Outdoor Education class at Selkirk organized and ran the stations for us, and students from the Kimberley Alternate School joined us during our rotations. This collaboration was so neat to see in action, especially since the high school students took on a lot of the planning and prep work. It was also incredible to watch the interactions between the students- the smiles and laughter filled the air! Ask your child to tell you about their favourite stations, their buddy, and the other kids in their group.

Station #1: Digging for buried treasures in the garden

Station #2: Leaf jumping (and throwing!)

Station #3: Nature scavenger hunt

Station #4: Nature Detective Box

Station #5: Fort/structure building

 Station #6: Animal tag

Station #7: Snack (dried apples and arrowroot cookies)

Station #8: Rock art and drawing favourite outdoor activity

A HUGE thank you goes out to Jenn Meens, Dan Clark, and all of their students for helping to organize this day and make it run so smoothly!
