A Winter Wonderland!

We totally took advantage of the incredible dump of snow on Wednesday, and worked hard to roll some huge snowballs and create walls for an "snow school house". I continue to be amazed by this group's ability to cooperate, share, and work together as a strong team. We worked on these projects for over an hour, and despite there only being 6 shovels to share amongst them all, they worked so well together and created something they were very proud of. When they were finished, they made an announcement about the "fort" in each of the classrooms and invited all of the other classes to help them add to it at lunch recess.

We had a great time with Frosty Flake for Winter Wonder today! She took us out to our fort area to look at various types of snowflakes (we found many "needles"!). She also had us form groups and find items to add to a snow sundae! We played a couple games out in the snow as well, and learned about animals that migrate, hibernate and stay in the winter. We also did a snow dance that is sure to bring more flakes!

When we went inside with Frosty Flake, she showed us a variety of furs and skulls that she borrowed from a Wildlife Biologist. Ask your child about what they saw and what they learned about these animals!

Scientists for the morning!

We came in this morning to a mystery reader right away. After hearing the clues (he is tall, he loves science, you've heard about some of his adventures but very few of you have met him, and he lives in Mrs. Burgess' house) most students figured out that it was Mr. Burgess! He read to us from a book that belonged to one of his parents, and enjoyed watching us do Show and Tell and our Magic Bag.

He then joined us for an adventure in the fort area with our adventure packs and shovels. He was impressed with how resilient the students were, and how well they all worked together outside. He could also easily see why we spend so much time outside!

When we came inside, it was time for some math and science! Mr. Burgess led a station focused on light and colour, showing us just how our overhead projector works. He was surprised that each group of students was interested in different materials and used them in various ways. Ask your child what they learned/created at this station.

I led a station where students were able to explore a variety of preserved bugs and small creatures and use a high powered microscope. Ask your child what they saw under the microscope! I also had students investigate light and shadow, using flashlights and mirrors. They really liked exploring the storage room in the dark!

Another station focused on number play with play dough, where students created numbers and various ways to represent numbers. Students loved adding, so we will do more with this in the future!

The final station allowed students to explore more with the scales and weights, comparing different materials based on weight and size. There was a lot of stacking and crashing at this station- messy+loud= lots of fun learning happening in here today!

Mr. Burgess left at lunch time, and in the afternoon, we read more of our chapter book. We have become really interested in penguins, so created our own penguins today!

A peek at our last week!

In order to celebrate having a full class, we decided to create a group art project. Each child used a different colour of paint to create a body and then added details with sharpie!

Students took time last week to create a goal for themselves for 2016. I was very impressed by the thought they put into these ideas, and the effort they put into writing the words!

We read the book The Man With the Violin, and created art while listening to Joshua Bell playing his violin.

We then created Scribble Art during our music lesson with Miss Lizzy- it was challenging to keep our eyes closed while we listened to two different songs!

We have enjoyed exploring math concepts with a huge variety of classroom materials. We have been investigating ways to make 5, numbers up to 10, sequencing, sorting and classifying objects, and the concept of more than/less than.

We have begun listening to our first chapter book. The title is being kept a mystery, but we are learning a lot about the characters in the story. The main character, Mr. Popper, just received a delivery, and we drew what we thought it might be. Many students guessed "penguin", so we will find out when we read more tomorrow!
