Christmas Concert Information

Our school Christmas concert is coming right up! We will be making dog headbands next week, so we wanted to give a few weeks notice that your child will just need to wear “dog colours” (brown, beige, black, white) for the concert on December 10 (rehearsal) and 11 (during the day and evening performances).

The song we will be singing was attached in an email sent out to all parents.

We will introduce the song to the kids this week and will begin practising next week. If you are able to play it and sing along at home, that would be great too!

On December 10, both K groups and the grade 1’s will be going to Garden View Village to sing Christmas songs to our Senior Friends. Here is the list of songs we may be singing so that you can practise at home:
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer
Santa Claus is coming to town
Up on the housetop
Frosty
Jingle bells
The 12 days of Christmas
Oh Canada
The Snowball song (link to youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQoJCpGoL2o )
Deck the halls
Winter wonderland
We wish you a Merry Christmas

Thank you for your support!

All About Bats!

Batty Patty came to teach us All About Bats today! She was very impressed by everything we already knew about bats! We loved looking at her pictures of bats, and listening to the audio recording of a bat using echolocation. We also loved exploring all of the bat materials in the classroom! Some questions that can be discussed with your child at home:
What do bats in our area eat?
How many times does a bat flap it's wings in one second?
How does echolocation work?
Which bat could sit on your thumb?
What do vampire bats bite?
What do we do if we find a bat?

My Not-A-Box at Garden View Village (blue group)

Today at Garden View Village, we reread the story, "Not a Box" and created our own pages for a class book. We took these pages downstairs to explain to our Senior Friends. They loved seeing our drawings and hearing our descriptions of our pictures. We then did a little "finger song" with our Senior Friends and then went upstairs to explore some table centres. Dianne, Donna and Thelma joined us for all of the fun upstairs!

Amazing journals!

These just HAD to be celebrated! The blue group started the day off with journals today, and did an amazing job adding details, adding letters in the words in their pictures, and reflecting on their work!

Mystery Reader Surprise!

We had such a special Mystery Reader surprise today! Based on the clues (man, almost hairless, spends a lot of time at city hall and is related to two people in the class), we guessed that it was Aylan and Max's grandpa, Ron McRae!
opening the door for our special guest!

We had a lot of questions and comments for Mr. McRae ("Do you get to make up all of the rules?", "Are you the principal of Mrs. Bancks?", "Are you in charge of the whole city?"and my personal favourite, "My mom votes for you!").

Mr. McRae read an awesome book that made us laugh so much!

At the end of our visit, he invited us all up to have a field trip to City Hall, and told us that we will even have a chance to sit in the Mayor's chair! We are already thinking about a field trip plan :) Thank you for the visit, Mr. McRae. We can't wait to see who our next Mystery Reader will be!

First Garden View Village Visit (Blue Group)

We had such a wonderful first visit to Garden View Village. Our lovely senior friend, Dianne, was waiting with open arms when we arrived. She was so excited to meet all of us! We had our snack, and then created cloud art based on our idea, "Peace is... looking for animals in the clouds".

When we finished our art, we went on a tour upstairs to see more of the building. We were really respectful of this being other people's home, and loved looking at all of the displays our senior friends had outside their rooms. Marshall's mom then read us a story about peace before we went downstairs to meet everyone at coffee time. We brought a lot of smiles to the faces of our senior friends at the table, and we enjoyed talking to them about our art.

We even had a little family reunion! Thelma was so excited to see one of her grandchildren!

We had a great time and are already excited about our next visit!

Enhancing Fine Motor Development at Home

At the beginning of the school year, we spend a great deal of time working on fine motor skill  development. We do many activities using a variety of materials, including pom poms, tongs, clothes pins, egg cartons, scissors, beads, pipe cleaners, cups, string, etc. These are skills that all Kindergarten students can be practising at home as well! After discussing fine motor skill development with a number of families during our interviews a couple weeks ago, we decided to post some ideas here. We have found a lot of great websites with lists of awesome fine motor skill activities, many of which can be done with items found around the home or purchased at the dollar store. If you feel like your child could use some extra practise at home, please check out the following websites or ask us for more suggestions!
