April 23: Red Group Garden View Visit

Since it was such a busy week with Earth Week activities, we did most of our weekly Language Arts program while we there. It was all wrapped up into one theme of our new poem “This is the Way.” We sang our way through the book “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” then we did the Words our Way sort in table groups. The kids had to decide how to divide the pictures into two groups or ideas. If someone in their group disagreed with where they put a picture on their turn, then they each had to explain why they thought it belonged on one side of the page or the other. It was great to hear the kids talking out their ideas! I also came around and asked them to explain to me what was the same about each group of pictures.  Diane and Thelma joined a couple of the table groups as well.

We did the sort altogether and came to the conclusion we could sort the pictures in two different ways: items that clean our bodies/items that clean the house and items found in the bathroom/items found in other parts of the house. You'll notice in the pictures that the images are being displayed onto a projector screen using our document camera. The kids thought this was pretty magical, especially when they could see my hand turning the pages of the book and moving the pictures around into the sort!!!

Afterwards we made our own poems using the sentence frames "This is the way we ________ our _________." The kids used the Words our Way pictures for ideas. Thelma decided to do her own sentence frame as well!

We took our sentence frames downstairs in our AB partners to sing them to our senior friends.

We will be adding our sentence frames to our poetry duotangs so we can sing them to you at home and to our Buddy readers!
