Batty about Bats!

Ever since seeing the bat on the side of the school, we have had so many questions about bats! The students told me what supplies they might need to create their own bats, and then amazed me by working so hard on creating very unique bats. These bats will soon be on display on our hall bulletin board, along with what they 'know' and 'wonder' about bats.

After reading a bit about bats and discussing what we "know", we ended up with a lot of questions! In order to answer our questions, we called in one of our resident bat experts, Jaia. He told me that I could record the discussion, and I could hardly keep up to him! He had so much knowledge to share with our class, and he had the class' attention for almost 20 minutes!

A few things we learned from Jaia:
- flying fox bats are the biggest in the world
- vampire bats do exist but they don't eat human blood
- bats are rare in Canada (we really only have brown bats)
- bats live in herds or flocks
- they cannot fly upside down, but they can dive
- they don't chase with their eyes, they chase with their ears
- bats get a pink tummy when they have a baby growing inside them
- they eat moths, beetles, and mosquitoes
- if you get bit by a bat, they might have germs from the things they eat, so you need to go to the hospital for a needle

Ask your child what else they have learned about bats!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, Jaia! We are so lucky to have you around to learn from!
